FAQ

Do I need previous cooking experience?

No. You don't need any previous cooking experience to study at Caraway. Our programmes are designed to teach you everything from the ground up, building your skills and confidence step by step. While having some basic cooking knowledge can be helpful, it's certainly not a requirement - we'll equip you with the practical skills you need to succeed in a professional kitchen.

How long does it take to qualify?

Caraway offers a range of programmes to suit different career goals, with course durations ranging from 6 months to 3 years. Whether you're looking to gain foundational culinary skills or pursue a comprehensive professional qualification, there's a programme designed to help you achieve your ambitions.

Can I work overseas with these qualifications?

Yes. Caraway's qualifications are internationally recognised, giving graduates the opportunity to pursue careers both in South Africa and abroad. Many of our graduates go on to work in restaurants, hotels, resorts, and on cruise ships around the world.

Will I get practical experience?

Yes. At Caraway, practical experience is an essential part of your training. As part of your studies, you'll complete Work Integrated Learning (WIL), giving you the opportunity to work in a professional kitchen and become part of a real kitchen brigade. This hands-on experience allows you to apply the skills you've learnt in class, build confidence, and gain valuable insight into the day-to-day operations of the hospitality industry before you graduate.

Can I own my own business?

Absolutely. If your dream is to own a café, bakery, catering company, restaurant, or another food business, Caraway can help you build the foundation to make it a reality. As part of your studies, you'll complete our specialised entrepreneurship module, The Business of Food, where you'll gain practical knowledge in business planning, costing, marketing, and operations. This equips you with the skills and confidence to not only work in the industry but also successfully manage your own food business in the future.

What if I want to specialise in baking?

Caraway offers a 1-year Professional Patisserie Diploma, available on both a full-time and part-time basis. This specialised programme covers a wide range of pastry disciplines, including artisan breads, cakes, desserts, chocolate work, and much more. If your passion lies in the art of pastry and baking, this programme will equip you with the practical skills, techniques, and confidence to pursue a rewarding career as a professional pastry chef.

What is it really like working in a professional kitchen?

A professional kitchen is fast-paced, hands-on, and built on teamwork. You'll need to stay organised, communicate well, and remain calm under pressure, especially during busy service. The hours can include evenings, weekends, and public holidays, and the work is physically demanding. While it takes dedication and hard work, it's also an incredibly rewarding career for people who are passionate about food, enjoy working with others, and thrive in a dynamic environment.

How quickly can I progress in my career?

Career progression depends on your attitude, work ethic, and willingness to learn. As a Caraway graduate, you'll enter the industry with practical skills and real-world experience, giving you a strong foundation to start your career with confidence. Many graduates begin in entry-level positions and progress to roles with greater responsibility as they gain experience. Those who consistently demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a passion for excellence often advance more quickly, with opportunities to move into senior positions, management, or even start their own food business.
